Posh Spice is an understatement. Victoria Beckham, a former member of the infamous U.K. girl group, took her nickname and put it to good use. Long gone are her bubblegum pop days of the '90s. Now a staple of the fashion world, Beckham runs a highly successful namesake brand comprised of various clothing, accessory, and beauty lines. But how did she do it?
The Spice Girls were a revolution. Boy bands cluttered the '90s music scene until a "manufactured" group of five women were selected to take over. In a very X-Factor and film casting manner, Victoria Beckham and her fellow Spice Girls were hand-picked during rounds of open auditions, and thus, the iconic group was born in 1994. Surprisingly, the girls' clever nicknames were not created by the team. Top of the Pops magazine labeled each Spice Girl member with their own character trait and it stuck. Ginger, Baby, Posh, Scary, and Sporty.
Hits like "Wannabe" and "Girl Power" lived on the charts, their fame even warranting Spice World: The Movie to be filmed only four years after the group's creation. But like most musical groups, the infamous breakup swiftly occurred. Perhaps Posh's rise to fame (and subsequent outshining of her peers) after her engagement to David Beckham was the culprit, or maybe Ginger's sudden departure mid-tour. Reasons aside, Victoria Beckham began to replace "Spice World" with the fashion world in the 2000s.
Prior to her self-titled brand's creation, Victoria took the denim landscape by storm. Collaborating with Rock and Republic in 2004, Beckham designed her own line of jeans called VB Rocks for the denim brand. Comprised of high-end jeans designed to have a lifting effect, Victoria's line also included a logo T shirt adorned with her class crown emblem.
Later, Victoria teamed up with her husband in 2006 to create DVB Style, a combination of their names. Exclusively limited to denim and eyewear, the brand had a short lifespan, other than its logo's slight integration in her later ventures.
In addition to dipping her feet in the design space, Beckham was a top model in the early 2000s. One of her most notable campaigns was an iconic advertisement for Marc Jacobs, a close and unlikely friend of Victoria's. Photographed inside of a shopping bag for the label, Beckham's famous legs were sprawling out of its interior on every billboard. Ten years later, Beckham re-created the look for her own brand, even launching a T shirt with the motif.
Establishing her house, Victoria Beckham, in 2008, the former pop princess designed her own signature sense of style for the masses to don. Luxurious, modern, and classically refined pieces categorized her new label. Beckham truly designed for all well-dressed and monochrome-loving women, her work perfect for CEOs and high society alike.
As Beckham held limited fashion design experience aside from the red carpet and some modeling, it may be hard to believe that her debut collection developed a prestige comparable to long-standing luxury houses. But the reasoning is simple: celebrity names are powerful. Brand recognition can make or break a designer. First comes the label, then the actual clothing. Victoria Beckham already had the prestige, the coveted style. Women every wanted to be posh. And now they could.
Not to mention that her designs illustrated an impressive knowledge of the fashion industry. Critics had nothing but positive feedback about her first collection, surprised by her know-how and chic sense of style. Perhaps the shock occurred because they did not expect such a classy line from Posh Spice, but the media was blown away by the results of Beckham's creativity.
Now in 2021, Beckham's brand has expanded to beauty and accessories, along with becoming a cutting-edge and innovative tastemaker. Her latest Spring/Summer collection is a distant cry from her ten original dresses, while unwaveringly using the same inclination of class and wearability. And even some denim.
Ever so mysterious and seemingly always missing a smile, Victoria Beckham has remained an icon for years. Her role in London style may have begun by riding her wave of Spice Girls fame, but almost thirty years have passed since the group's founding. Victoria Beckham has solidified herself as a top designer through her own merit and abundant talent in appealing to her steadfast consumer base.
A pop group and high-profile husband may have gotten her foot in the door, but Victoria Beckham has earned her fashion respect solo.
