K-Pop star and bonafide fashion icon Kai revealed some of his most interesting style quirks ahead of Seoul Fashion Week — and we are paying close attention.
The EXO singer and soloist, who was named one of GQ’s Best-Dressed Men of 2020, is no stranger to the world of high fashion. He made history back in 2019 as Gucci’s first Korean global ambassador, leading to his very own limited-edition capsule collection with the luxury brand dropping earlier this year. He also has partnerships with the likes of Bobbi Brown and Korean outdoor brand BLACKYAK. But now, he’s added another fashion arrow to his already stacked quiver: Global Ambassador for the Spring/Summer 2022 season of Seoul Fashion Week.
Kai was announced as the new ambassador for the event, which is entirely digital this season, back in September. In the promotional images for the announcement, Kai was seen wearing a suit by ready-to-wear brand BMUET(TE).
Taking place from October 7, this season of Seoul Fashion Week includes 37 fashion shows and also aims to highlight the South Korean capital and the charms of its past, present, and future via a digital fashion film. In a video promoting the event ahead of its official kick-off, Kai reflected on his own changing approach to fashion over the years. “I use clothes to express myself”, he admits. “I used to only think about how to sing or how to dance, but now that I’ve been a singer for ten years, I came to think about how to express myself as an artist.”
In fact, his tenure in the music industry is serendipitously linked to his new role as part of Seoul Fashion Week. He’s reminded that the room he’s currently sitting in to record this video is the same one EXO performed in back in 2014 for the event — something he cringes at in hindsight. “When I was 21? That’s a long time ago!”, he winces, recalling his youthful fashion origins. “What I realized then is that it’s not easy. I got walking classes to be on that runway! I was worried that I might ruin the stage, that I might make a mistake, I was very stressed”.
These days, Kai is far more accustomed to being surrounded by the world and work of high fashion. Fans caught a glimpse earlier this year of his envy-inducing walk-in closet on the Korean TV show I Live Alone (나 혼자 산다), where stars show how they live to the public. Filled floor to ceiling with luxury brands, eagle-eyed admirers noticed many of the clothes still held their original tags — something that’s now become a point of intrigue. “‘Are you going to sell it?’, ‘Are you going to say that it’s brand new and sell it again?’, ‘Do you not wash your clothes?’”, Kai jokes about the responses he’s received since he made the revelation. “I do wash my clothes of course, but I put on the tag again to keep them well. This is my habit that’s really bothersome, but I used to do this because I wanted to take care of my clothes, then it continued to today.” Though he has one exception: “I do take off the tags from my shoes,” he reassures viewers.
Seoul Fashion Week is ongoing until October 15, with clips from the runway shows available across a multitude of channels, including the event's YouTube channel. Until the event officially wraps up, we better stay tuned for whatever else Kai might have in store for us.
