WICHITA, Kan. (Catch it Kansas) - Hoisington entered the game with a 5 and 1 record and a perfect 3 and 0 in Class 2A District 8. Norton came to Elton Brown Field at .500 with a 3 and 3 record. They were 1 and 2 in District play. All three of Norton’s losses came on the road, where they averaged scoring a touchdown while allowing 23 points. The Cardinals dropped their first game of the season against Pratt. Since then, they have won every game.
Legend Robinson came into the night with 1,283 yards of rushing and 16 touchdowns. Norton won the toss and deferred to the second half. Hoisington took the ball. They began at their 20-yard line and marched down the field in ten plays and five minutes off the clock.
Legend Robinson capped the drive with a six-yard touchdown rush that barely broke the plane. Carlos Mota added the extra point for a 7-0 early lead.
Norton took over on their 26-yard line after the kickoff. The Bluejays only needed one play to tie the game up. Garrett Urban took off on a 64-yard rush for a touchdown. After the extra point, the game was level again. Hoisington milked the clock with their next drive. The drive took eight plays to complete.
Legend Robinson ran the ball in from nine yards out to score his second touchdown of the night. Carlos Mota added another extra point to make the score 14-7.
Norton started to gain some momentum on their next drive. After reaching the Cardinal 37-yard line, quarterback Sean Anderson rolled out looking for a receiver on fourth and four. Instead, his pass found the hands of Hoisington’s Ian Smith. Smith returned the ball down to the Norton 45-yard line. Legend Robinson got the ball on the very next play and took off for a 45-yard touchdown run. Carlos Mota’s kick went through the uprights again to raise the score to 21-7.
After the Bluejays went three and out, Hoisington took over the ball on their 45-yard line. Quarterback Wyatt Wikum stood in the pocket and found an open Chase Steinert in the middle. Steinert completed the play by taking it all the way in for a touchdown. The completion marked Chase Steinert’s first-ever catch in a game. Mota added the extra point to extend the lead to 28-7. Legend Robinson scored his fourth touchdown on the night from a seven-yard rush late in the second quarter. The Cardinals went into the locker room at halftime up 35 to 7.
Norton chose to receive the ball to start the second half. Garrett Urban caught the ball on the 23-yard line and then went all the way across the field to score a touchdown. Norton missed the extra point to set the score at 35-13. Hoisington took the ball back over on their 38-yard line. Wyatt Wikum began a drive that culminated in a 23-yard quarterback keeper for a touchdown. Mota made another extra point to make it 42-13.
After a three-and-out by Norton, Legend Robinson scored his final touchdown of the night on a three-yard rush. Mota’s extra point was blocked to give Hoisington a 48-13 lead. With a 35-point lead, the clock would run continuously except for injuries or timeouts.
Garrett Urban scored a 79-yard touchdown run after the running clock had started. He also added a two-point conversion to make the score 48-21. Hoisington scored seven touchdowns on the night. They scored at least two in each of the first three quarters. Legend Robinson accounted for five of those touchdowns. He also had 21 carries for 182 yards.
Wyatt Wikum scored the other rushing touchdown on ten carries and 116 yards. Wikum also threw a touchdown pass to Chase Steinert. Wyatt threw five attempts with two completing. Norton’s Garrett Urban led the team with 151 yards on five carries. He also scored two rushing touchdowns. He added a touchdown on a kickoff return. Urban compiled 257 yards of total offense. Hoisington earned 24 first downs to Norton’s seven.
The Cardinals totaled 448 yards of offense to the Bluejays’ 235. Norton faces rival Phillipsburg in a district game next week. A win keeps them in the hunt for a playoff berth. Hoisington travels to Beloit and Trojan Field to face their fellow district undefeated team, the Beloit Trojans. The winner of the game will win the district title.
