The GFWC Woman’s Club of Macclenny held its annual fashion show fund-raiser at the Mathis House at the Glen St. Mary Nursery on Sunday with some 60 attendees who raised more than $3500 for scholarships.

Among the organizers and club members was Lea Rhoden, who thanked the online and brick-and-mortar clothing shops supplying the garments — the Beauty Parlor, Harbor Grace Fashion, Curvy Road Boutique and Rack Up.

“We could not have done it without them,” said Ms. Rhoden of the fashion retailers.

The fashions included casual and formal dresses, leisure and business wear, rompers and jumpsuits, and all with a Spring theme.

Ms. Rhoden said the club hopes to incorporate men’s clothing into the show next year. She serves as executive director of the Baker Prevention Coalition, which also provided some prom dresses for the occasion. Some of the models decided to buy their outfits, too.

“We could have used more racial diversity in the modeling. It’s one of our goals as a club, so we’re aware of it,” she said, noting that the models varied more widely in terms of ages and sizes, but not as much in race and gender.

Still, “The girls had a lot of fun,” putting on the show, Ms. Rhoden said. She also thanked the Taber family for free use of the venue and the sheriff’s office, who supplied chairs for the audience.

“The woman’s club has always participated in community and fundraising events but due to COVID that was on hold. Now that we’re coming out of the pandemic we can open up to help again,” said Michele Hodges of Rack Up, who also helped organize the affair. “This was our first fundraiser with people in attendance so we kept it small, around 60. Graduation is coming soon and this will help fund scholarships.”

The woman’s club meets on the third Thursday of the month for lunch at 11 a.m. at the clubhouse, 144 S. 5th St. All interested ladies are encouraged to attend.
